The Ley

Slapton Ley

Slapton Ley is a wonderful 200 acre freshwater lake and nature reserve, where many resident and migrating birds may be seen, it is a great attraction to bird watchers and nature lovers from around the world.

Fishing on The Ley is allowed, but only from boats and by permit, both of which can be arranged at the local field centre who administer the nature reserve.

Slapton Village Church Lane

Nestling amidst the hills about half a mile inland from the sea, this ancient village is a delight to walk round, with quaint old cottages round every corner. People have lived here for over a thousand years, it was well established when it was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086, and the village church was first used as a place of worship over 700 years ago being mentioned as early as 1274 AD.

Boasting two inns and a village shop, one can easily spend most of the day exploring the tiny lanes, nooks and crannies of this delightful old village, there are also several excellent walks from the village to the nearby wildlife reserve of Slapton Ley.

Slapton Tower

The Chantry tower at Slapton is all that now remains of the original Chantry College, which was established by Sir Guy de Brian in 1373.

The de Brian family had owned Slapton since before 1250 AD and the Chantry continued in use until it was  dissolved in 1545 and was later granted as a house to Sir Thomas Arundell in 1551, in whose family it remained until it was finally sold in 1784.
