Start Point


Start point marks the southern boundary of Start Bay and has been the site of many shipwrecks in the past.  This can be a wild place on a windy day and the sea at these times is quite spectacular to see, with huge waves breaking over the point.

A lighthouse was first built here in 1836 and was only recently fully automated, as are all others round our coastline, yet it is still possible to walk down to the point, and imagine the many hours that the old lighthouse keepers must have spent keeping watch on passing ships.

From this point looking north you can see the ruins of old Hallsands village at the foot of the cliffs, where it was wrecked during a mighty storm in 1917, but regrettably no longer accessible to the general public. 

Whilst to the south the magnificent coastline sweeps away towards Prawle Point passing many beautiful and secluded coves in between
